1. THE PRE-HISTORICAL SHOEBILL STORK
The magnificent shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) is one of the most bizarre and sought-after avi gems in Uganda. Its striking appearance, unique behavior, conservation status and rarity, with only about 3,300-5,300 mature individuals left in the wild, and their numbers subtly declining, all make it one of the most protected bird species in the whole world and makes its sightings prized among birders and nature lovers.

- Mabamba swamp.
Located on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, just 12km west of Entebbe. - Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
This beauty is located 176 km along Kampala – Gulu Highway and welcomes visitors all year round promising both excitement and tranquillity at the same time. It is not only a prime destination to track white rhinos in Uganda but is also a perfect spot to witness this prehistorical bird in Uganda.

2. SHELLEY’S CRIMSONWING
This is a rare Albertine rift endemic and is among the highly coveted avian wonders that grace Uganda’s skies. This small, vividly coloured finch is draped in a cloak of brilliant crimson, set against olive-green wings, creating a striking contrast that looks almost too perfect for nature’s palette. Its ghost-like rarity that also makes it notoriously hard to spot, make its sighting so infrequent, putting it on the list of the most sought-after birds, with most birders spending years chasing it without success.

- Rwenzori mountains
Since this avian gem relishes moist montane forests with closed canopies near water sources, the Rwenzori mountains are also a perfect destination to spot them.
- Another famous spot for viewing this gem in Uganda is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, well known for holding a number of Albertine Rift endemics.
3. THE BLACK-BREASTED BARBET
Among other rare and bizarre avian treasures is the Black-breasted Barbet (Lybius rolleti). It is endemic to the north-eastern savanna landscapes. Its preference for arid and lightly wooded habitats means it’s far from the more frequently spotted birds in Africa, adding an adventurous twist to any birding expedition.

- Bugungu Wildlife Reserve
Located within the larger Murchison Falls Conservation Area, this reserve also offers diverse habitats, including savanna woodland and acacia wooded riverine areas, where the barbet can be seen perching on exposed branches or foraging among fruiting trees, especially in the early morning when bird activity is at its peak.
4. THE STANDARD-WINGED NIGHT JAR (Caprimulgus Longipennis)
This ornamental bird is a true spectacle of the avian eccentricity, with a secret that is only revealed during the breeding season. During this season, the males transform and grow extraordinary elongated black wings extending beyond their tail resembling ribbon-like standards that they display before females to impress and tame them, looking like surreal creatures from the magical world. After the season, the males shed them off, go back to drab resembling the females. This tactical show is predominantly enjoyed around dusk where insects are plentiful.

- Murchison Falls National Park.
This is one of the greatest places in Uganda to watch this species. They are frequently seen along the road leading to the top of the falls most likely after night fall.

- They are also rarely spotted in other savanna environments like Queen Elizabeth national park, Kidepo Valley National Park and Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve during the breeding season which is April – September.
5. DOHERTY’S BUSHSHRIKE

The Doherty’s Bushshrike, recognizable by its vibrant red forehead and throat, bright yellow belly, and distinctive black chest band, inhabits Uganda’s montane forests and dense underbrush. It’s a skulking species, more often heard than seen, which puts it on the list of the rarest and most sought-after birds around the globe

- Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
This Park, specifically the Ruhija sector offers excellent opportunities to spot Doherty’s Bush-shrike. Birdwatchers have the opportunity to visit other spots in this national park such as Mubwindi Swamp, and the bamboo trail usually guided by knowledgeable park experts who help track down this rare and elusive bird.
- Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Similar to Bwindi, this national park also offers an ideal environment for this species, characterized by its montane forests and dense thickets.
- Lake Bunyonyi
The forest paths surrounding Lake Bunyonyi provide an additional opportunity to possibly observe this bird, particularly in sections with thick underbrush.
