Day 1: Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary
Very early in the morning, you will be picked up by our guide driver around Kampala or at the airport and will embark on your 1-hour journey to water front beach Entebbe where you will board a boat to the Chimpanzee Sanctuary that is Ngamba Island on Lake Victoria. Before boarding, you will be provided with a life jacket to ensure a safe sail. You shall then set off at around 9:00hours taking approximately 45minutes by speed boat or 90-120 minutes by a traditional motorized canoe to get to the beautiful destination. Expect a beautiful treat to virgin views of Lake Victoria including sights of monitor lizards adoring the fresh waters to this beautiful lake, birds gracing its lavish atmosphere, and then photographic opportunities that will help you capture lifetime memories.
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by guides in the place and will lead you to the information center where you will attend an orientation session to learn about the history of this place, the way of life of these majestic creatures and their plight, and the conservation efforts that make Ngamba island a sanctuary for these incredible primates.
At around 10:00 hours, you will head to the viewing platform along the edge of the sactuary for an opportunity to watch or participate (this being subject to management exclusion and policy) in the morning feeding session. This opportunity assures tourists of fascinating views of these majestic creatures excitedly trying to capture the caretaker’s attention as they desperately ask for more food and others jump as they clap asking for food to fill their stomachs. From his platform, you can also adopt your favorite chimp for the day and feed it as you interact more while posing and snapping since it is a beautiful spot for photography too.
At around 13:00hours you will enjoy a very tasty lunch prepared on site as you enjoy fascinating views of Lake Victoria, relax and rest for the next part of the day. Please note that, packed food and drinks into the sanctuary were prohibited for enforcement of Chimpanzee Trust’s Environmental Management System, since Ngamba Island Sanctuary was founded.
At around 14:00hours, you will either go and enjoy another feeding session for additional observation and enjoyment, or go for an adventurous evening nature walk around the island, to learn about the islands ecosystem while enjoying vibrant plant species and other wildlife inhabitants of the area like Lizards, Spotted neck Otters and water mongoose together with birds like African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Great white pelican, Green Cuckoo amongst others. During the nature walk, you can also take part in the integration of the newly rescued chimps and infants by taking them for a walk around the island as you enjoy the soft touch of nature.
After the day’s activities you will debrief with your guides and share different experiences about your whole stay at the island as you relax, park your belongings and prepare for your journey back to your hotel, and then set off at around 17:00hours.
