Overview
Our one-day Shoebill birding tour takes you to Mabamba bay swamp the Ramsar site that is home to the endangered shoebill stork which is Uganda’s most sought-after bird by seasoned birders as well as nature lovers because of its intriguing peculiar looks and massive size. Mabamba swamp bay is also home to over 300 bird species which include the Black Heron, African Pigmy Goose, Blue-cheeked Bee-eater, Black Crake, Glossy Ibis, Black Heron, Goliath Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Black-crowned Waxbill amongst others. This trip is the ultimate birders paradise so welcome aboard.
Day 1: Mabamba Swamp
In the early afternoon, just after your lunch, you will be picked up by our guide driver and embark on your adventurous voyage to Mabamba village which is 41km northwest of Entebbe peninsula. It is a 3hours drive and will bustle through the Kampala traffic taking the Kampala express high way while enjoying the scenic beauty of Uganda’s country side. Welcomed by the cool tranquil air of Mabamba swamp, you will get a brief introduction by the local guides and thereafter will board a local canoe off for your adventure. Guided by an experienced local birding guide, you will drift through the swamp’s narrow channels flanked by dense papyrus reeds as you learn about the complex ecosystem.
Keep your eyes widely pealed for the swamp’s most captivating phenomena, the elusive shoebill stork, roaming around as it relishes the swamp’s natural beauty as some of them stretch their 8-foot wingspan with their shoe-like beak actively trying to capture some lung fish. Keep stretching hard and rise your binoculars not to miss a view of some other bird species for example the African marsh harrier, the glossy ibis, the long-toed lapwing, gracing the swamp’s atmosphere, while others also try to forage for a chance to capture a mud fish for dinner.
Get prepared to witness the sky’s dramatic transformations to gold, canvas, orange which is a breathtaking scene of sunset over the swamp as it magically reflects off the tranquil waters creating spectacular views and best opportunities to capture stunning photographs of birds and the surroundings worth to be treasured for a life time.
After your adventurous tour around the swamp, you will board your car, and ride back to Kampala for your night rest.
