Overview
This 3-day Fort Portal safari takes you to the western region of Uganda first to the historical and geographical site which is the Amabeere ga Nyinamwiru caves translated as breasts of Nyinamwiru in Fort Portal Kabarole District, then to Semuliki National Park which houses the Sempaya Male and Female Hot springs a conservation area bursting with biodiversity and avian richness and then to the Crater lakes of Fort Portal.
Day 1: Transfer to Fort Portal and Amabeere ga Nyinamwiru Caves visit
Our driver shall pick you up in the morning to embark on a 6 hours journey to Fort portal. You shall drive south via the Mubende highway and you shall take in stunning views from green landscapes and forests, farms, coffee and tea plantations and traditional homesteads.
You shall have a stopover for lunch after which you shall proceed to Visit the Amabere Caves.
Amabere ga Nyinamwiru caves stand between streams and volcanoes which make steep flowing waterfalls that are a beautiful sight and you are free to jump in for a dive. The caves are made up of stalactites and stalagmites in shape of a female breast a sight to unique and during the rainy season limestone water flows out of them hence the term “Amabeere” meaning breasts. The Amabeere walk is a 1-2hours walk taking you down ecologically diverse jungle caves lined with various fauna and flora and the walk is conducted while explaining the history and Origin of the Chwezi dynasty.
After the Amabeere visit you shall drive and check into your lodge/hotel for dinner your your overnights stay.
Day 2: Sempaya Hot springs in Semuliki National Park and crater lakes exploration
On this day you shall wake up to a sumptuous breakfast at 6:30 am, and then proceed to drive to Semuliki National Park 62kms away from Tooro town. The drive to Semuliki is so scenic and it takes you through sights of meandering Semuliki River, Volcanic Hills and valleys, Rwenzori Mountain ranges and community farms.
Semuliki National Park is located in the Semuliki valley dominated by Ituri forest of the Congo Basin within the larger Albertine Rift ecosystem.
The park houses two hot springs the male and female hot springs in a hot mineral encrusted swamp. The Female Hot spring is a geyser that forms a a 0.5m high fountain releasing hot water at 103 degrees Celsius that boils Eggs and Plantain an activity many tourists engage in. The Male Hot springs are a breathtaking steamy hot water boiling and bubbling as they are heated up by the earth’s Crust. Both the male and Female Hot springs are believed to be sacred locations for the Male and Female Gods by the locals due to the disappearance of Biteete at the male hot springs and Nyasimbi his wife at the female hot springs.
The park is home to Primates like the baboons, and mammals like the Sitatunga. The park also houses more than 400 bird species including the rare Oberländer’s ground thrush, Grey-Throated Rail, and the Congo Serpent Eagle. So, grab your binoculars, follow the instruction of the experienced local guide and enjoy this exciting walk.
After your Semuliki Exploration you shall drive back to Fort Portal for a crater lakes exploration and adventure. Formed as a result of volcanic activity over 1000 years when molten rock lava blows off the surface of an extinct volcano forming a large basin that is later filled by water, Fort portal is known to have over 50 crater lakes which include lake Nyabikere, Lake Nkuruba, Lake Kyaninga, Lake Saka, Lake Nyinambuga the crater lake on the 20,000Ugx shillings note amongst others. The Crater Lakes are so scenic with stunning views, tremendous hiking spots and are a place for birding.
You shall retire to your Lodge after the day’s activities for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Return to Kampala
After a hearty breakfast you shall check out of your hotel and embark on your return journey to Kampala/Entebbe Airport along roads lined with Banana and Coffee plantations You shall have a stopover for lunch en-route your journey and arrive in the evening.
