Overview
This 3-day Kibaale National Park safari takes you to the western region of Uganda first to the historical and geographical site which is the Amabeere ga Nyinamwiru caves in Fort Portal, then to Kibaale forest the Primate capital of the world boosting with over 1500 chimpanzees and other primates lastly the Bigodi wetland sanctuary a conservation area bursting with biodiversity and avian richness.
Day 1: Transfer to Kibale National Park, Amabeere ga Nyinamwiru Caves visit
Our driver shall pick you up in the morning to embark on a 6 hours journey to Kibale National Park. You shall drive south via the Mubende highway and you shall take in stunning views from green landscapes and forests, farms, tea plantations and traditional homesteads.
You shall have a stopover for lunch after which you shall proceed to Visit the Amabere Caves.
Amabere ga Nyinamwiru caves stand between streams and volcanoes which make steep flowing waterfalls that are a beautiful sight. The caves are made up of stalactites and stalagmites in shape of a female breast and during the rainy season limestone water flows out of them hence the term “Amabeere”. The Amabeere walk is a 1-2hours walk taking you down ecologically diverse jungle caves lined with various fauna and flora and the walk is conducted while explaining the history and Origin of the Chwezi dynasty.
After the walk you shall drive to Kibaale national park and check into your lodge/hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 2: Chimpanzee Tracking and Bigodi Swamp
On this day you shall wake up to a sumptuous breakfast at 6:30 am, and then drive to Kibale National Park for Chimpanzee tracking at 7:00 am. The Tracking starts off with a briefing at the visitor center about the primates, what to do and what to expect. Chimpanzee tracking is a 1-3hours walk and the time can be shorter or longer depending on various factors. You shall be paired up in to make groups of 6 all led by a guide ranger as you head out into the raw primate harbor.
You shall be Welcomed by the misty dew, a sense of fresshness, chirps of the Nahan’s partridge and echoes of the distant colobus monkeys.
Kibale is home to over 1000 primates hence the primate capital of the world, 370 bird species including the 23 Albertine Rift endemics The low-land masked apalis, Nahan’s francolin, blue headed bee-eater and cassin’s spinetail and a further 120 mammals including baboons, bushbucks and elephants.
Chimpanzees are tracked following their hand prints, sounds, nests and after a long walk you shall gaze up and observe the habituated Pan troglodytes whom we share 98.7% of our DNA in their wild habitats. Do not mimic their sounds as you spend a full hour with them as they go around grooming each other, resting, climbing up and down trees.
After Lunch, you shall head to Bigodi swamp. Located at the edge of the profuse Kibale National Park, Bigodi wetland sanctuary boosts with scenic beauty and biodiversity including primates such as the black and white colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabey, olive baboon and the rare L’hoest Monkey, over 200 bird species i.e., white-winged warbler, hornbills, yellow weaverbirds and the great blue turaco, colorful butterflies, amphibians like frogs and veiled chameleons. So, grab your binoculars, follow the instruction of the experienced local guide and enjoy this exciting 1-2 hours walk.
You shall retire to your Lodge after the day’s activities for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3: Return to Kampala
After a hearty breakfast you shall check out of your hotel and embark on your return journey to Kampala/Entebbe Airport along roads lined with Banana and Coffee plantations You shall have a stopover for lunch en-route your journey and arrive in the evening.
