Overview
Our three days Lake Mburo National Park trip shall take you to the smallest and the nearest national park in Uganda yet one of the most beautiful parks where the highest concentration of zebras and Impalas are sighted in the country. The Park is home to 2 of the big five which are Buffaloes and the elusive leopard which makes it an ideal place for walking and cycling safaris.
The park is home to more than 315 bird species including the shoe bill, 68 mammals and primates like baboons and monkeys. As part of your journey to the park, you shall have an Ankole cultural immersion experience at Igongo cultural center making this voyage a wholesome offering.
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala and a visit to Igongo cultural center
You will be picked up from your Hotel by our guide driver in the morning and shall embark on a 4-6 hours journey to Lake Mburo National Park in the west. Along the way you shall enjoy a scenic drive through the countryside as you immense yourself in the beauty of the green landscapes of the pearl of Africa. You shall have a stopover at the equator, which is a line that divides the earth into 2 equal parts, you will take a rest and stretch as you enjoy refreshments, photography and also engage in symbolic activities like straddling the line, standing in both hemispheres (north and southern hemispheres) simultaneously, and witnessing dramatic water demonstrations that showcase the Coriolis effect. You will also have an opportunity to buy yourself a souvenir at curial shops around the area, then get back to your journey.
At around 1pm, you will arrive at Igongo cultural center located at the rim Mbarara town where you shall have your lunch. After lunch You shall have a tour around Igongo Cultural center that is a cultural museum (Eriijukiro) which is a collection of Art, crafts, photos, antiques that represent the norms, customs and cultural history of the south western Uganda people. It is a hub of the Ankole Culture and experience. Please expect to explore the museum, art gallery and ancient traditional homesteads of the Ankole people while at Igongo.
After Igongo Cultural center, you shall take a hike to Biharwe Eclipse Monument that was built in commemoration of the total eclipse of the sun that took place on April 17 1520. The Eclipse is mentioned in folktales of Bunyoro, Buganda and Ankole whose three pillars each represent the 3 kings who were co-peers at the time of the eclipse. Ntaare I Nyabugarobera of Nkole Kingdom, Ssekabaka Nakibinge of Buganda and Olimi I Rwamitamaganga of Bunyoro Kingdom. At the top of Biharwe hill are spectacular views of Mbarara town and Lake Mburo.
Later in the evening, you will get to your hotel, check in, have dinner, then rest for the night.
Day 2: Morning game drive, Lake Mburo Cycling experience and an evening boat safari along lake Rwanyogyeti
You will wake up to a sumptuous breakfast and You shall start with an early morning game drive around lake mburo national park and enjoy breath taking views of vibrant wild animals like zebras, hippos, impalas and the elusive solitary leopard if you are lucky enough. Different bird species can also be sported around the park which include African finfoot, Fish Eagle, and the Red-faced barbet amongst others. After the Morning Game drive, you can opt for a cycling expedition around the park to further experience the animals up-close.
Later after the exploration, you will have your lunch, and relax a bit, as you prepare for the last part of the day.
In the late afternoon, you will embark on a boat safari and will have excellent birdwatching opportunities, with great chances to see the big game which include buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, impalas and other animals as you also enjoy the serene beauty of landscape of this beautiful national park. Thereafter, you will go back to your hotel, have dinner, enjoy the luxurious experience at your hotel, and rest for the night.
Day 3: Transfer back to Kampala
You will wake up to a warm sumptuous breakfast, check out of the hotel and embark on your journey back to Kampala or your next destination.
